everything you need to know to get a joomla site running

Harnessing the power of videos on your site.

As you all must have noticed in today’s world, people are kinda leaving writing and typing behind. Most people now prefer to make a simple video or audio and embed it on their website so that their viewers can easily play the videos or even download them. Now there is good news and there is bad news. The bad news is that out of the box, the Joomla core doesn’t come with video streaming capabilities :’(. The good news is that it can still be done using a very powerful but yet simple and easy to use plug in called Allvideos.

In the words of the developers,

“AllVideos allows you to embed online streaming videos inside your content items as well as your own video or audio content that resides either on your server or some remote server. For example, you can use YouTube to upload your videos and then embed them inside your site using the easy AllVideos tags, without consuming your server's bandwidth or having to spend money on expensive video conversion software! Or you can choose to stream/play directly from your server any type of video or audio content uploaded.”

The Allvideos plug-in allows you to simply upload your videos as usually to a specific directory or folder and play it on your website directly. It also supports videos from various other sites such as youtube, vimeo etc. The plug-in makes use of the curly brackets to work.

Using all videos require only a few simple steps which are:

• Downloading the allvideos plugin

• Installing the allvideos plugin and making sure it is activated,

• Creating the directory I spoke of earlier and uploading the video

• Go to the required article or module and insert the syntax {video extension}video name{/video extension} eg “{flv}Joomla videos{/flv}”

• Save and close and your done.

Now I will elaborate on the steps a bit

1. Downloading the plugin in

  • simply do a search in the joomla extension directory at using "allvideo by joomla works"

2. Installing the plug-in

• After downloading it, leave the zip file unzipped

• Go to your Joomla admin account click the extensions> extensions manager> choose file> and then click upload after selecting the file.

• Next activate the plug-in by going to extensions>plug-in manager> clicking the red button to turn it green.

3. Creating the folder

• Next click on content> then media manager> then create a new folder and call it videos

• Upload the needed video (it is important that you learn How to upload files directly to Joomla using the media manager )

• and yup this step is done

4. Using the syntax.

• Above, the syntax has been explained so here we will use it practically.

• Go to the needed article,

• Insert the syntax “{video extension}video name{/video extension}” without the quotes

• For example if I had an mp4 video and it was called Untitled this would be my syntax “{mp4}Untitled{/mp4}” without the quotes off course.

• Save your article and preview it.

The expected outcome should be something similar to this

That is all and now you can easily stream videos on you Joomla website. Be sure to drop me a comment if you found this useful and I will gladly answer any further questions.
